Environmentalists - what, how and why

Life is a very important aspect of our existence; the driving force of our universe, I might say. The development of our race has been and is occurring at a substantial speed. However, is this growth in our favor?

If, eventually, we are to benefit in every way from what we think is development, then certainly the growth is in our favor. To develop the environment one will most certainly require intellect, maturity, and many more qualities. Since we are in every way dependent on our environment, taking good care of it is rather important. Environment is the physical surroundings, conditions, circumstances, etc., in which a person lives; or the totality of the physical conditions on the Earth or a part of it. A person who is concerned with or advocates the protection of the environment is called an environmentalist.

Humans are the ingenious creatures dominating the planet 'Earth'. Their sovereignty could be ascribed to mainly their thinking faculty. This dexterity has to be reckoned with utmost momentousness en route to many great discoveries and inventions. The spur for a better life shall never cease. Nevertheless, in the process of all these discoveries and inventions and craving something better than what went before, we perhaps overlooked, or rather underestimated, the very stability of our environment; and thus our own stability has declined.

The global warming, the depletion of the ozone layer are nothing but signs of the destruction of the environment. Since we are probably the only reason for the depletion of our environment, the responsibility of balancing everything out and stabilizing the environment is upon our shoulders. And in order to do that we need environmentalists who seek to influence the political process by lobbying, activism, and education so as to protect natural resources and ecosystems. In simple words, we need environmentalists and environmental organizations that seek to give natural world a stronger voice in human affairs.

Ignoring all the arguments as to how the universe or the world came into existence, we can agree that the world abides by certain laws and we cannot, no matter what, go against them. Since it works in accordance to a group or many groups of law, its vulnerability to harmful actions is significant. As it follows certain laws, it can only tolerate certain actions done by us upon it; do anything otherwise and its stability, or the 'health' of the environment, declines. It is not just the carbon-monoxide emitted by automobiles or the poisonous gases emitted by the factories that harm the environment: it is only air pollution. 'Environment' has a broader meaning as I have mentioned before. The harmful actions may include everything from burning debris to burning fuel; from killing mosquitoes to killing larger animals; in short, everything that might shake the balance of the environment.

Modern environmentalism originated with the industrial development. It is a diverse scientific, social, and political movement where environmentalists advocate the sustainable management of resources, and the protection and restoration of natural environment through changes in public policies and individual behavior. In its recognition of humanity as a participant in ecosystems, the movement is centered around ecology, health, and human rights. Environmentalism covers broad areas of institutional oppression. For instance, consumption of ecosystems and natural resources into wastes, dumping wastes into disadvantaged communities, air pollution, water pollution, weak infrastructure, exposure of organic life to toxins, monoculture, and various other focuses.

There is another type of environmentalism called the Free Market Environmentalism, which is a theory that argues that the free market, property rights, and tort law provide the best tool to preserve the health and sustainability of the environment. It considers environmental stewardship to be natural, as well as the expulsion of polluters and other aggressors through individual and class action.

The preservation of the environment is viewed as the setting aside of natural resources to prevent damage caused by contact with humans or by certain human activities, such as logging, mining, hunting, and fishing, often to replace them with new human activities, such as tourism and recreation.

Environmental organizations can be global, regional, national, or local; they can be government-run or private (NGO). Moreover, groups dedicated to community development and social justice also focus on environmental concerns.

As for India, environmentalists are required in huge numbers as the country is, to a certain extent, not environment-friendly. Although attempts have been made to preserve the environment, they have not been of much success.

Those aspiring to be environmentalists are bound for a bright future!
