Sports Management

Just around a decade and a half ago, if a child went up to his elders and said I want to be a sportsperson the parents would flummox, flip and if they were a non-violent set the worst they’d do was lock the child up in the room for a few hours and pray his sanity returns. But today a father is more than happy to have a Sachin Tendulkar or a Leander Paes in his house while a mother wouldn’t mind going that extra mile to have a Sania Mirza or a Saina Nehwal in her daughter.
But if we closet our minds thinking the only career sports entails is being a sportsperson then again we are dealing with ignorance. In our country that is young in age and at heart and with information trickling down to the grass-roots it is no longer a secret that a career in sports today, not just as a sportsperson, is as promising as any other.
The sporting arena has always brought out champions but what is more important is that this arena now demands excellent managers who can understand every nuance of the sport and optimally manage all the resources available at hand.
The sports page in a newspaper screams about the new developments in the sporting world, be it a player jumping from one team to another or an entry of new technology in the sport. But why don’t we ponder for a moment? Who is behind all these developments? Who is the person managing all these strings? Who is helping a player or a team attain limelight?
Well the answer to it is as simple as it gets, it is none other than a sports manager. A career that is now hypnotically pulling a lot of youth, who are passionate about sport, may not have made it to the mid-field but are surely determined to be a part of the game in every way possible.
The step to be a sports manager would be to first be zealous and avid about the world of sports, the next step would be to enroll yourself in an MBA programme with specialization in Sports Management. With that you open doors of numerous opportunities such as being a part of the system in the professional sporting showground along with managerial positions in college sport, recreational sports, sports marketing, sporting event managements, facility management, etc. With a professional sports management degree a person can very smoothly fall into the economic, financial and social functioning of any sporting field. Of course one can take up a further specialization be it cricket, soccer, tennis, baseball, etc. based on how sportingly true your heart is akin to a particular field.
The global sporting world is eclectic and so there is a strong demand for specialized professionals in this field. Till July 2010, every aspiring Indian sports manager had to partake in courses abroad for a post graduate degree but now this unique and fulfilling course is available within our geographic boundaries with international standards. The need for skilled and knowledgeable sports managers is escalating with the entry of more and more global sports and the desire to fair better as an Indian in the committee of sporting nations.
So why just limit ourselves to being a sportsperson to be a part of this competitive and fervent world of sporting craze – when we can be an integral part as a sports management expert bringing with us the much needed professionalism, ethics and laurel oriented approach that is a surging demand today.
